The return pulley is placed where the belt is to change its direction of rotation by 180°. This will often be at the tail end of the conveyor belt. The return pulley often has the same diameter and bearing as the drive pulley. Like all other non-driven pulleys, it can be provided with either external or internal bearings. Tail pulleys are usually located immediately preceding the loading point of the conveyor.

The diameter of tail pulley is smaller than driving pulley. It is installed at the tail of belt conveyor to change the direction of conveyor belt. Tail pulleys can be used to return or redirect a conveyor belt back toward the drive pulley. Conveyor tail pulleys commonly serve the purpose of a take-up pulley to keep tension on the belt.

Return pulleys, essential for the proper functioning of belt conveyor systems, can be supplied without a coating but are generally equipped with lagging to extend the lifespan of both the belt and the drum pulley. In most cases, a smooth rubber lagging is applied, as the primary role of this type of Conveyor pulley is to ensure the belt's return without generating traction. For applications where belt tension is critical and essential, the tension pulley may require a specific lagging to prevent excessive slippage. This not only ensures smooth operation of the belt conveyor but also effectively protects the belt under high tension.

Features

The tail pulley is located at the loading end of the belt. It comes with either a flat face or a slatted profile (wing pulley), which cleans the belt by allowing material to fall between the support members.
