ASEAN Coal Consumption Is Expected To Grow

2026-01-08 00:00

According to the analysis report of the International Energy Agency (IEA), it is predicted that by 2030, coal consumption in Southeast Asia (ASEAN) will increase at an annual rate of 4%.

The IEA predicts that China's coal demand growth will slow down during the same period. And India's coal demand will grow by 3% annually between 2025 and 2030. And as a major source of global coal demand growth, India's total coal demand will increase by 22.5 million tons in the five-year period from 2025 to 2030.

At the same time, the incremental contribution from ASEAN countries will be 1.27 million tons. The growth in coal demand in ASEAN is mainly driven by high demand from Indonesia and Vietnam.

In 2025, the coal consumption in ASEAN countries is expected to reach approximately 5.16 billion tons, an increase of about 4% compared to 2024.

Indonesia led the region's consumer growth with nearly half of the share, followed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Laos.

In 2025, Indonesia's coal consumption is expected to reach approximately 2.66 billion tons. Mainly due to the continued population growth, an expected 5% economic growth, and a 7% increase in electricity demand. This is reflected in the increase in the capacity of grid-connected power plants and the continued promotion of coal power production by self-supplied power plants operating independently in industrial areas. At the same time, with the growth of the economy, the use of coal in nickel processing and other industrial sectors continues to increase.

In particular, nickel smelting and metal processing in Indonesia will continue to support coal demand. In addition to nickel, aluminum smelting capacity is also increasing, particularly in North Kalimantan, which requires a large amount of electricity, thereby increasing dependence on coal-generated power in the short term.
