Global Coal Demand Reaches Record High

2025-12-18 00:00

The International Energy Agency (IEA) stated that global coal demand will reach a record high in 2025, but it is expected to decline by 2030 due to the displacement of coal in power generation by renewable energy, nuclear power, and abundant natural gas.

According to the International Energy Agency's "Coal 2025" report, coal demand is expected to increase by 0.5% in 2025, reaching a record 88.5 billion tons.

Keisuke Sadamori, Head of Energy Markets and Security at the International Energy Agency, stated in a press conference: "Looking ahead, we observe that global coal demand is stabilizing and will begin a slow and gradual decline before 2030."

Despite observing different trends for 2025, this prediction remains largely unchanged from last year's outlook. Due to increased hydroelectric power generation from strong monsoons and suppressed electricity demand, India's coal usage has declined for the third time in 50 years.

U.S. coal consumption has increased this year due to rising natural gas prices and an executive order signed by Trump to save coal-fired power plants that may be retiring and increase coal production.

IEA states that as the world's largest coal consumer, China's coal demand remains essentially unchanged this year. With the increase in renewable energy capacity, it is expected that China's coal demand will slightly decrease by 2030.
