Rise Of Xinjiang Coal

2025-12-17 00:00

Xinjiang is an important energy production base in our country, with the largest coal reserves nationwide. Before 2021, Xinjiang coal was mostly circulated within the region, with about 96% used for domestic consumption, and the export volume was generally within 20 million tons. In recent years, with the tense international energy situation, the phased increase in coal prices, and frequent extreme weather events in China, domestic coal demand has rapidly grown, and the export volume of coal from Xinjiang has significantly increased.

Jiangmei's external transportation relies primarily on rail transportation, supplemented by road transportation. In 2023, Xinjiang coal exports were 11,000 million tons, with 6,023 million tons completed by rail, accounting for 67%, and 4,977 million tons completed by road, accounting for 45.2%. By 2024, Xinjiang Railway's coal export volume will reach 9061 million tons, exceeding 9000 million tons for the first time, with a growth of 50.2%. Daily rail loading of 12,000 cars has become routine. Starting from September 2024, Xinjiang Railway Department has formulated and implemented 15 measures to ensure the transportation of Xinjiang coal. They operate 134 coal trains daily, with 82 of them heading to Xinjiang's external markets. The daily coal export volume exceeds 290,000 tons.

Due to Xinjiang's unique geographical location, its coal is mainly supplied for local consumption and shipped out of Xinjiang primarily to the northwest region, including Ningxia, Qinghai, and Gansu provinces. However, with the recent large-scale exit of coal production in Southwest China, the demand for Xinjiang coal in Southwest China has also been increasing. In 2022, Xinjiang coal was first transported to Sichuan, Guizhou, and Inner Mongolia. Among them, Hami coal was first transported via combined rail and road transportation to ports such as Beijing-Tangshan Port, Tianjin Port, and Cao Feidian Port, and then transferred to eastern coastal cities. In 2023, Xinjiang coal exports have covered 20 provinces and cities across the country.
