Colombian President Petro posted on social media on January 6, once again condemning the United States for forcibly controlling Venezuelan President Maduro, stating that this move is aimed at seizing Venezuela's oil. He also accused the U.S. of threatening Colombia with the intention of coveting the country's coal resources.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry stated that it will summon the acting ambassador of the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, McNamara, on the same day and issue a protest note regarding the recent remarks by U.S. President Trump about the possibility of military intervention in Colombia. Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio stated that if the United States launches an attack on Colombia, the Colombian military is prepared to defend the country and its people.
In addition, Villavicencio pointed out that only the Venezuelan people can decide their own destiny based on their sovereignty. Regarding the U.S. claims of forming a working group to "manage" Venezuela, Colombia "opposes colonial-style management."
