The Main Reasons For The Increase in Coal Prices

2026-04-01 00:00

The main reasons for the increase in coal prices are as follows:
 1. Domestic Market
 (1) Non-electricity demand support. "The 'Golden March, Silver April' period is approaching, and with the steady increase in the operating rates of the construction materials and chemical industries, the demand for non-power coal is showing a stable and increasing trend, providing solid bottom support for coal prices."
 (2) The substitution effect of imported coal is becoming apparent. The overlapping of Ramadan with heavy rainfall in Indonesia, along with delayed quota approvals, has led to a continued tightening of supply. Australian coal prices are also at high levels, and the landed price of imported coal has already surpassed domestic coal prices. Some demand is shifting from the import market to the domestic market, which has undoubtedly exacerbated the supply and demand tension in the domestic market.
 (3) Expected impact of maintenance on the Daqin Line. Although current rail freight volume remains high and port inventories continue to accumulate, with the maintenance period approaching, the market anticipates a future supply contraction, which has prompted some traders to hold onto their goods and refrain from selling.

 2. Xinjiang Market
In the context of the overall strengthening of the domestic market and the continuous rise in coal prices in the main producing areas, the Xinjiang coal market is also improving, with coal prices constantly increasing. Main reason:
 (1) External market transmission. Due to the impact of the international situation, imported coal is restricted, and domestic coal prices in Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia continue to rise. Xinjiang thermal coal, with its price advantage, continues to see strong demand outside the region, further expanding the market space.
 (2) The support of railway policies. The railway discount policy introduced in February effectively reduced the overall cost of transporting coal out of Xinjiang, significantly boosting the enthusiasm for shipping.
 (3) Impact on transportation efficiency. Due to recent extreme weather conditions, some coal mines have suspended loading operations, while large trucks are having difficulty finding vehicles, which has limited self-loading efficiency and further increased the pressure on downstream inventory replenishment.

 3. Outlook for the Future Market
In the short term, international coal prices will remain high, and there is a possibility of an increase in domestic coal prices. However, considering that the off-season for coal use is approaching, inventory levels at all stages are high, long-term contracts are being fulfilled steadily, and the country has the ability to quickly respond with policy coordination and supply assurance, even if imported coal significantly decreases, the expected increase in coal prices will be relatively moderate.
