World's Top Ten Coal Producing Countries

1.  China
China remains the world's largest coal producer, a position it has held for decades. In 2024, the coal extraction volume is estimated to be approximately 4.78 billion tons, accounting for more than half of global coal production.

2.  India

Coal remains the backbone of India's electricity generation, producing over 70% of the country's electricity, reflecting its central role in meeting the energy needs of its rapidly expanding economy and population.

3.  Indonesia

Indonesia produced approximately 836 million tons of coal in 2024, securing its position as the world's largest exporter of thermal coal. Coal exports supply major markets such as China, India, Japan, and South Korea.

4.  America

The largest coal mine in the world (by production) is the Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming, USA. In 2024, the United States produced approximately 465 million tons of coal, accounting for 5% of global production. The decrease in coal production is mainly due to the long-term shift towards natural gas and renewable energy, as well as environmental regulations leading to mine closures and reduced coal power generation.

5.  Australia

In 2024, Australia's coal production will remain at approximately 463 million tons, showing a slight increase of 0.3%. Australia is one of the largest coal exporters in the world, supplying coal to China, India, Japan, and South Korea.

6.  Russia

Coal mining is mainly concentrated in Siberia and the East, and is used primarily for domestic power generation and export to Asian markets. As a complement to its oil and gas exports, coal remains a crucial energy resource for Russia.

7.  South Africa

South Africa produced 2.5% of the global coal output in 2024, maintaining a stable production level over time.

8.  Kazakhstan

Coal plays a very important role in Kazakhstan's energy structure, serving domestic power plants and industrial sectors. The country's vast area and abundant resources make it an important coal producer in Central Asia.

9.  Mongolia

In 2024, Mongolia's coal production surged to approximately 106.5 million tons, exceeding 1 billion tons for the first time, an increase of 27.7% compared to the previous year. It has the fastest coal production growth rate among major coal-producing countries.

10.  Germany

In 2024, Germany's coal production decreased by 10.4% compared to the previous year. They are actively phasing out coal through their energy and climate policies and plan to completely eliminate coal power generation by 2038.
