Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) are established and reviewed by the Japan Industrial Standards Committee (JISC). JIS is the most important and authoritative national standard in Japan. According to the provisions of the Japanese Industrial Standardization Law, JIS standards cover various industrial fields, with the exception of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, silk, food, and other agricultural and forestry products, for which there are specific standards or technical specifications.
The IS standards are further divided into 19 categories, including civil engineering, general machinery, electronic instruments and electrical machinery, automobiles, railways, ships, steel, non-ferrous metals, chemicals, fibers, mining, pulp and paper, management systems, ceramics, daily necessities, medical safety equipment, aviation, information technology, and others. As of February 7, 2007, there were a total of 10,124 current JIS standards.
