The History of Castings

Castings are metal objects formed using various casting methods, which involve pouring, injecting, or using other casting techniques to inject molten metal into a pre-prepared mold. After cooling and subsequent processing such as grinding, the resulting objects have a specific shape, size, and performance.

The application of castings has a long history. In ancient times, people used cast metal to make tools and some household items. In modern times, castings are mainly used as the raw material for machine parts, and some precision castings can also be used directly as machine components. Castings account for a large proportion of the weight in mechanical products. For example, in tractors, castings make up about 50-70% of the total weight of the machine, 40-70% in agricultural machinery, and 70-90% in machine tools and internal combustion engines. Among all types of castings, those used in machinery have the most varieties, the most complex shapes, and the largest volume, accounting for approximately 60% of the total casting output. Next are the steel ingot molds used in metallurgy, the pipes used in engineering, and some tools used in daily life.

Castings are also closely related to daily life. For example, commonly used items like door handles, door locks, radiators, water and sewage pipes, iron pots, gas stove frames, and irons are all cast items.
