In 2025, China's oil and gas production both reached record highs, with crude oil production at approximately 2.15 billion tons and natural gas production exceeding 260 billion cubic meters, marking the 9th consecutive year of production growth by more than 10 billion cubic meters.
Wang Hongzhi, the head of the National Energy Administration, stated that in 2025, China's energy security was strong and effective, with the best supply performance since the "14th Five-Year Plan." The country successfully and effectively responded to 20 instances of peak power demand during the summer that exceeded last year's peak, successfully concluded the "Seven-Year Action Plan" for increasing oil and gas reserves and production, and continued to improve the level of energy resource complementarity and mutual support, while maintaining a stable power system security situation.
In terms of energy resource complementarity and mutual support, the layout of national power flow has been optimized, and the construction of cross-province and cross-region transmission channels has been strengthened. Five inter-regional power mutual support projects, including those in Fujian and Jiangxi, have been approved and authorized, and the Tibet-Guangdong DC ultra-high voltage transmission project has been approved for construction. The national capacity for power transmission from west to east has reached 340 million kilowatts. The third and fourth lines of the West-to-East Gas Transmission Project have been fully operationalized, the first section of the Sichuan-to-East Gas Transmission Project has been completed and put into operation, and the provincial-level oil and gas pipelines have steadily integrated into the national oil and gas network, with the total length of long-distance oil and gas pipelines reaching 200,000 kilometers. The export volume from the main coal-producing areas exceeded 1.9 billion tons.
Wang Hongzhi stated that in 2026, energy work will focus on achieving a higher level of energy security, strengthening the foundation of coal supply assurance, improving power supply levels, enhancing oil and gas production and supply capabilities, optimizing the layout of key energy transportation routes, and improving the intrinsic safety level of energy infrastructure.
