India Has Relaxed Restrictions On Coal Exports

2026-01-09 00:00

Indian Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that due to the surplus of coal in the country's power plants,  the government approved the export of coal on the 12th.

Power plants that control coal supply are allowed to export up to 50% of their quota and can allocate coal usage among group companies.

India is the second largest coal producer in the world, and in order to meet its growing energy demand and reduce dependence on imports, the country's coal industry has been opening up to private enterprises and commercial mining.

In the first 11 months of this year, coal-fired power generation, which typically accounts for 75% of India's total electricity production, experienced a year-on-year decline in 7 of those months, with the decline being the largest since 2020.

This move will also benefit India's largest coal producer, Coal India, which accounts for about three-quarters of India's total coal production. India is the second largest coal producer and consumer in the world, after China.

IENR (iEnergy Natural Resources) pointed out in a report that due to the ample domestic coal production in India and the slowing growth in electricity demand, the coal inventory at the country's power plants remains high.

The Indian Cabinet also approved coal auctions on the 12th to meet various industrial needs.

This policy will allow domestic buyers to obtain long-term coal supplies through auctions, without restrictions on the final use, except for coking coal, which will not be included in this plan.
