The scale of China's geothermal industry has long been the world's largest, with a geothermal heating and cooling area reaching 1.65 billion square meters by the end of 2025. Currently, Sinopec has cumulatively built geothermal heating and cooling capacity covering 137 million square meters, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 6.7 million tons annually, making it the largest geothermal energy development and utilization enterprise in China.
The National Key Laboratory of Deep Geothermal Energy is the only national key laboratory in the field of geothermal energy in China. It was approved for construction in 2024 with the aim of addressing the major needs of the country's "dual carbon" goals and the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy structure, focusing on building a national strategic scientific force. In 2025, the National Key Laboratory of Deep Geothermal Energy is committed to the goal of becoming a world-class hub for deep geothermal technology innovation, comprehensively advancing basic research, technological breakthroughs, technology transfer, and talent cultivation, and successfully completing the annual construction tasks with high quality.
In the next step, the National Key Laboratory of Deep Geothermal Energy will continue to adhere to theory-driven and technology-led approaches, deepening basic research and cutting-edge exploration in deep geothermal energy; it will focus on demand-driven and industry-led approaches, accelerating key technology breakthroughs and the conversion of research results; it will uphold openness and collaboration and share responsibilities, uniting the strong forces to build a world-class laboratory, making greater contributions to the high-quality development of the geothermal industry and ensuring national energy and resource security.
