The Status of Nuclear Power in the United States
The United States has established its dominant position in the nuclear power sector with the largest number of operating nuclear power plants. The Fermi reactor in the United States also enabled humans to achieve the first self-sustained nuclear reaction, leading humanity into the nuclear energy era. Westinghouse designed the first commercial reactor, while General Electric designed the first boiling water reactor and pioneered the design of the non-passive third-generation pressurized water reactor. It can be seen that nuclear power in the United States has always been at the forefront of the world.
The status of nuclear power in France
France has limited coal, oil, and natural gas resources. The utilization rate of hydropower resources is over 95%. Therefore, as energy consumption increases, the energy self-sufficiency rate continues to decline before nuclear energy is developed on a large scale. To meet the demand for electricity driven by economic development, the French government adheres to a policy of "energy independence" and has decided to prioritize the development of nuclear power. As early as 1974, it announced that all new power plants would be nuclear plants, and no more thermal power plants would be built. Currently, French nuclear power plants provide about 77% of the country's electricity supply. In the world, France's total nuclear power capacity ranks second only to the United States, making it the country with the highest reliance on nuclear power in the world.
The status of nuclear power in Japan
Due to natural constraints, Japan is severely lacking in conventional energy resources. In the supply of conventional energy sources, oil is almost entirely dependent on imports. In order to provide a safe and stable energy supply, Japan is emphasizing the development of nuclear energy. After the Kyoto Conference, the Japanese government considered nuclear power to be an effective way to address environmental issues, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and ensure a stable energy supply. Currently, Japan is the third largest nuclear power producer in the world, after the United States and France.
The status of nuclear power in South Korea
South Korea has very limited natural resources and has implemented policies to promote the development of various energy sources through multiple channels, emphasizing the introduction of advanced foreign technologies and striving to achieve the domestic production of nuclear power. In 2009, South Korea and the UAE signed a nuclear power construction agreement worth $20 billion. Currently, South Korea has become the third country in the world to independently develop third-generation nuclear power technology.
The status of nuclear power in Russia
With government support, the Russian nuclear power industry has moved towards emphasizing technology research and development and vigorously promoting nuclear power exports.
The Status of Nuclear Power in Canada
Canada has a long history in nuclear energy research and development, similar to that of the United Kingdom and the United States.
The status of nuclear power in Germany
Due to environmental and safety concerns about nuclear power, Germany plans to stop building new nuclear power plants and has shut down 8 nuclear reactors since the Fukushima accident. Although Germany is vigorously developing renewable energy sources, it is far from being able to make up for the power shortage caused by the closure of all nuclear power plants.
The status of nuclear power in the UK
The United Kingdom was once a leading country in nuclear power development, but since the 1970s, the development of North Sea oil fields improved its energy situation, and coupled with concerns about nuclear safety, the country's nuclear power development entered a decline. In the early 21st century, 30 years later, the UK reopened the door to nuclear power.
