Shaft Thread and Drilling Processes

Drilling and tapping are two common processes in mechanical machining, and they are closely related. Drilling is usually required before tapping, and the size of the drill hole needs to be determined according to the thread specifications. Generally, the drill hole diameter is equal to the thread outer diameter minus the pitch.

For example, when tapping an M6 thread, the drill hole diameter is approximately 5.0-5.2mm. The drill center is mainly used for drilling, while tapping mainly withstands axial forces and cannot withstand large radial forces. Additionally, equipment such as multi-axis drills can perform both drilling and tapping operations simultaneously, improving processing efficiency and precision.

Tapping is the process of creating internal threads, while drilling is the process of preparing the base hole for tapping. The diameter of the base hole needs to be calculated based on the thread's outer diameter and pitch. For example, for steel and ductile metals, the formula for calculating the base hole diameter is: D (base hole diameter) = d (thread outer diameter) - p (pitch). Additionally, the drilling center is mainly used for drilling, while tapping mainly withstands axial forces and cannot withstand large radial forces. Therefore, selecting the appropriate drilling equipment and parameters is crucial for ensuring the quality of tapping.
